Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe, leader and secretary general of the National Unity Party and legal counsel for Ousainou Bojang, said in a recent interview that his dedication to the rule of law is not driven by political ambition.
Speaking with For the People by The People, Darboe traced his commitment to justice and public service back to his school years, long before opportunities to hold government office arose.
“I studied in the United States. In fact, history was what I studied when I was at the Gambia High School, sixth form, so my interest in the rule of law and justice has nothing to do with political office as far as I am concerned. Like I said, if I wanted to serve in the cabinet, I could have served in the cabinet a long time ago, but that’s not my interest,” he said.
Darboe said his focus remains on fostering a Gambia where equality and merit, rather than political connections, determine opportunity.
“My interest is the Gambia—a Gambia where every Gambian is equal. I believe in meritocracy,” he said.
He added that his involvement in public affairs predates contemporary political debates and that his engagement is motivated by national concern rather than personal gain.
“I am in this really not because I’m running for political office,” Darboe said.
