Gambian Court Sentences Woman to 4 Years for Assault With Hot Oil

A magistrate in Bundung has sentenced a woman to four years in prison for pouring hot oil on a man while he slept, calling the attack “senseless” and “callous” in a ruling that emphasized the deliberate nature of the assault.
Magistrate R. Mendy of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court found Sainabou Bojang guilty of the assault on Sulayman Savage, whom prosecutors described as her alleged boyfriend. The court imposed both the prison term and a compensation order of 100,000 dalasis, roughly $1,470, to be paid to the victim.
According to court testimony, Ms. Bojang heated the oil and waited until Mr. Savage was asleep before pouring it on him. Magistrate Mendy said the attack was unprovoked and showed “a significant level of planning.” Ms. Bojang attempted to flee after the assault but was apprehended, the court heard.
Medical evidence presented during the proceedings documented severe burns to the left side of Mr. Savage’s face, neck, and upper limb. He was hospitalized for 13 days and required daily wound dressings and medical treatment, according to court records.
In her sentencing remarks, Magistrate Mendy noted that Mr. Savage continues to experience physical pain and emotional distress. “His physical scars will serve as a constant reminder of the convict’s cruelty,” she said.
The magistrate acknowledged that Ms. Bojang was a first-time offender who showed remorse and admitted to the crime, avoiding a lengthy trial. But the severity of the assault demanded a strong response, she said.
“No person has the right to inflict such injuries and pain on another person, especially unprovoked,” Magistrate Mendy said, classifying the assault as falling into the highest category of harm and culpability.
The sentence was issued under Section 196 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025. If Ms. Bojang fails to pay the compensation, she will serve an additional month in prison.
Magistrate Mendy said the sentence was intended to send a message that “senseless violence will be met with the full force of the law.” She informed both parties of their right to appeal.
