Gambia Police Force Appoints Demba Sowe as Deputy Inspector General of Police

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has announced the appointment of Demba Sowe as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), following the statutory retirement of his predecessor, Momodou Sowe.

Prior to his promotion, DIG Demba Sowe served as Assistant Inspector General of Police for Crime Management. A native of Kampassa Village in Foni Jarrol, West Coast Region, he brings over 30 years of experience in law enforcement to his new role.

Since joining the GPF in 1990, DIG Sowe has held several key leadership positions, including Officer Commanding at Mansa Konko Division, Commissioner of Administration, and Director of Intelligence at the former National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Barrister-at-Law (BL) degree from the University of The Gambia and has completed extensive professional training both domestically and internationally in areas such as criminal investigation, traffic management, and peacekeeping.

DIG Sowe has also represented The Gambia on international peacekeeping missions, notably with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) between 2004 and 2006.In a statement, the GPF High Command extended its congratulations, noting, “The Police High Command warmly congratulates DIG Demba Sowe on his well-deserved promotion and looks forward to his continued leadership in advancing the vision of a professional, accountable, and community-centered Police Force,” the police noted.
