The Gambia Immigration Department said its officers intercepted 28 irregular migrants near Balinghore in the North Bank Region following an intelligence-led operation conducted in collaboration with the Second Infantry Battalion of The Gambia Armed Forces.

According to the department, the operation was carried out by officers stationed at the Kerr Ali Border Post after receiving intelligence about the movement of migrants in the area.

The group comprised 10 Gambians, 16 Senegalese, and two Malians, the department said.

Immigration officials also arrested a 45-year-old man, identified as Ebrima Chatty, on suspicion of involvement in migrant smuggling.

The department said that after preliminary processing, Mr. Chatty and two other suspects were transferred to the Gambia Immigration Department’s Barra Migration Management Unit for further investigation before being referred to the department’s Migration Management Unit in Tanji.

In a statement, the Immigration Department said the operation reflects its continued efforts to disrupt migrant smuggling networks and prevent The Gambia from being used as a transit route for irregular migration.

The department added that it remains committed to enforcing the country’s immigration laws while promoting safe, orderly and regular migration.
