The Independent Electoral Commission said on Monday that voter identification cards issued in 2016 are no longer valid, seeking to dispel what it described as a growing wave of misinformation circulating online ahead of the 2026–2027 election cycle.
In a statement, the commission said the 2016 voter cards had been “declared null and void” prior to the 2021 General Registration of Voters, and therefore cannot be used in any upcoming elections.
“The Commission hereby reiterates that voter cards issued in 2016 were declared null and void before the commencement of the 2021 General Registration of Voters,” it started in a press release.
Officials emphasized that only cards issued during the 2021 registration exercise remain valid for the current electoral cycle. The commission also warned that individuals who registered in 2021 should not attempt to register again during the ongoing supplementary exercise.
The supplementary voter registration, which runs from April 8 to May 21, 2026, is intended for citizens who were unable to register in 2021, as well as those who have reached or will reach the age of 18 by December 5, 2026, the commission said.
Reiterating its concern over false claims, the commission urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate and timely electoral information, cautioning against what it described as misleading and malicious content being shared online.
