Demba Ali Jawo, former Minister of Information and a member of the Apex Initiative, has said the group cannot force opposition parties to unite ahead of the December 5 presidential election, despite making unity a central objective.

Speaking in an interview on Kerr Fatou, Jawo explained that while Apex will make every effort to encourage collaboration among opposition stakeholders, the final decision rests with the parties themselves.

“We will try our level best, but we cannot force them. If they see that it is in their interest and that of the country to come together and counter what is on the ground because everyone argued that the situation on the ground is untenable,” he stated.

Jawo further expressed concern about the country’s political direction, arguing that President Adama Barrow is surrounded by individuals primarily motivated by personal survival rather than national interest.

According to him, these individuals understand that their political relevance would likely end once President Barrow leaves office.

“That is the situation,” Jawo said. “So they will do and say anything to convince people that the situation is good and Barrow should continue.”
