The Republic of The Gambia and the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday marked the 10th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations, with officials from both countries highlighting a decade of expanding cooperation and development support.
In a joint acknowledgment of the milestone, the Chinese Embassy in Banjul and The Gambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed to what they described as steady progress in political trust and practical collaboration since ties were restored in 2016.
The Chinese Embassy said the relationship had deepened across multiple sectors, delivering “tangible benefits” to citizens in both countries. Over the past decade, China has supported projects in infrastructure, health care, agriculture, and education, areas central to The Gambia’s development agenda.
“This decade has seen our two countries continuously strengthen political trust and deepen practical cooperation,” the embassy said in a statement, adding that Beijing remained committed to broadening the partnership.
“China stands ready to join hands with our Gambian friends to further promote our bilateral friendship and open a new chapter of shared development,” it added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the anniversary as a reflection of “mutual trust, fruitful cooperation, and shared progress,” underscoring the government’s view of China as a key development partner.
Local officials echoed that assessment. Rohey Malick Lowe, the mayor of Banjul, said Chinese support had played a significant role in advancing national priorities.
“The People’s Republic of China has significantly contributed to the development of our nation in the areas of education, agriculture, health, and infrastructure,” she said.
The anniversary comes as both countries signal an intention to deepen ties further, building on a partnership that has become increasingly central to The Gambia’s development strategy.
