The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, welcomed a high-level delegation from Azerbaijan on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation and development links between the West African capital and Baku.
The delegation, led by Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mayor Lowe at her city office to discuss avenues for deeper diplomatic engagement and strategic partnership.
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Mayor Lowe described the meeting as a “homecoming of the heart,” recalling her personal and professional connection with Azerbaijan. She noted that it was on Azerbaijani soil that she received the United Nations-Habitat Special Citation, awarded by the then Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif—an honor she called a “pinnacle” of her public service career.
The discussions centered on reinforcing ties between the Middle East and Africa, with a focus on shared priorities including youth empowerment, climate-smart development, and regional collaboration.
“Our continents share common aspirations and resilience,” Mayor Lowe said. “Partnerships like ours prove that collaboration across these regions is not optional; it is essential for global progress.”
She also expressed her appreciation to Deputy Minister Rafiyev and the delegation, praising their “time, vision, and unwavering warmth.” Mayor Lowe concluded by affirming her respect for Azerbaijan’s people and environment, noting that the spirit of shared development was being reciprocated.
