Africell Gambia on Thursday presented jerseys to Nawettan teams from across the country, renewing the telecommunications company’s longstanding support for grassroots football and youth development.
The jerseys were handed over during a ceremony at Africell’s headquarters on Kairaba Avenue as teams prepare for the upcoming Nawettan season.
Ronald Senghore, Africell’s communications director, said the presentation has become an annual initiative for the company and reflects its continued investment in community sports.
Senghore said the beneficiary teams were selected from different Nawettan zones based on applications and performance. The recipients included teams from the Greater Banjul Area and communities in other parts of the country.
He thanked Africell’s management for approving the initiative and said the company remained committed to supporting grassroots football, which plays an important role in youth development in The Gambia.
“Africell will always continue to partner,” Senghore said. “This is not the first, and it will not be the last. We all know that this is very important in youth empowerment.”
Senghore also used the ceremony to brief representatives of the teams on The Gambia’s transition from seven-digit to nine-digit mobile numbers, which is scheduled to begin at midnight. He encouraged them to help share accurate information about the change in their communities, amid what he described as misinformation surrounding the transition.
Mbye Bittaye, Africell’s media manager, said the company has been a longtime supporter of sports development in The Gambia and that providing jerseys to Nawettan teams has become part of its annual tradition.
He expressed satisfaction that Africell was able to continue the initiative this year and said the company’s support for sports and youth development forms part of its broader corporate social responsibility efforts.
Nawettan football is one of The Gambia’s most prominent grassroots sporting traditions, with community tournaments drawing players and supporters across the country. The competitions have also provided a pathway for young footballers, some of whom have gone on to play in the national leagues and represent The Gambia at international level.
