IEC Says Revising Courts Have Begun Hearing 2026 Voter Registration Objections

The Independent Electoral Commission has announced the commencement of Revising Court hearings across The Gambia to consider objections arising from the 2026 supplementary voter registration exercise.

In a statement issued on Aug. 31, the commission said magistrates appointed by the Office of the Chief Justice had begun hearing cases involving challenges to individuals registered during the supplementary exercise.

The hearings are a key step in resolving disputes over the voter register ahead of the 2026 elections, allowing objections to be examined and determined before the electoral roll is finalized.

According to the IEC, the names of those who filed objections, as well as those whose registrations have been challenged, have been published at its offices.

The commission said hearings are being conducted at magistrates’ courts across the country, with individual magistrates determining the dates for cases under their jurisdiction.

The designated courts are the Kanifing and Bundung Magistrate Courts, Brikama Magistrate Court, Mansakonko Magistrate Court, Kerewan and Farafenni Magistrate Courts, Janjanbureh, Kuntaur and Kaur Magistrate Courts, and Basse Magistrate Court.

The IEC said the proceedings are expected to be completed within 60 days of their commencement.

Revising Courts provide a formal process for adjudicating objections to the inclusion of individuals on the voter register, giving parties involved an opportunity to present their cases before a magistrate.

The hearings come as the commission continues preparations for the 2026 electoral cycle and faces heightened scrutiny over the accuracy and integrity of the voter register.

“The Commission assures the general public and all stakeholders in the electoral process of its determination to enhance the integrity and credibility of the electoral process,” the IEC said.
