The Gambia has been ranked among Africa’s 10 best-governed countries in the 2026 World Economic Governance Index, placing alongside Cape Verde, Mauritius, Botswana, Ghana, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

The index assigned The Gambia a governance score of 47.6, ranking it 74th globally.

The Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, attributed the country’s standing to gains in press freedom, political rights, and reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures.

“These are what really made us achieve this very remarkable achievement. Globally, we are ranked number 74,” Dr. Ceesay said during an appearance on West Coast Radio.

He added that a separate 2026 global index ranked The Gambia’s passport as the most powerful in West Africa and 64th worldwide. According to Dr. Ceesay, Gambian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 70 destinations.

“It remains the strongest in West Africa because we enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 70 destinations,” he said, describing the ranking as evidence of sustained diplomatic engagement and strengthened international cooperation.
