Ebrima Nyang, Administrative Secretary of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has declared that his party will not allow any political party to impose a presidential candidate on them in ongoing or future coalition negotiations ahead of the December 5 presidential election.

Speaking on The Brunch on Saturday, Nyang reaffirmed the GDC’s willingness to engage in coalition discussions but stressed that such talks must be conducted on equal terms, with all participating parties given a fair opportunity to present their candidates for consideration.

“In any negotiation, we are going to promote the candidacy of Honorable Kandeh,” Nyang said. “If he cannot lead, then we will consider another candidate. However, we cannot enter coalition talks where we are told it must be candidate A, or there will be no negotiation.”

Nyang also criticized the approach of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in coalition-building efforts, describing it as inflexible and counterproductive. He argued that such a stance is disrespectful to other political parties and warned that no single party, including the UDP, can secure victory in the presidential election on its own.

The GDC official reiterated his party’s commitment to constructive dialogue but maintained that any coalition arrangement must be built on mutual respect and shared decision-making.
