The Gambia is set to establish an AI-driven misinformation and disinformation response center aimed at combating the spread of fake news, the Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has announced.

Speaking on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Dr. Ceesay explained that the center is a project conceptualized by his ministry, with endorsement and funding from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He added that ECOWAS views the initiative as a pilot that could serve as a model for other African countries, with the center expected to launch in March.

“Now, this response center, the manner in which they use AI to promote fake news and disinformation, we are also going to use AI to counter it in real time,” he said.

Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, the minister noted, “We will be in big trouble. The biggest threat to humanity’s existence and particularly to our sovereignty is disinformation and misinformation.”

Dr. Ceesay emphasized that while AI can be misused to amplify false information, the same technology can be leveraged to combat it. He confirmed that the system is currently under development.
