The Gambia Police Force has announced an investigation into the death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie, who reportedly collapsed while fleeing from officers during a patrol in Mandinaring on Friday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, police said officers encountered a group of young men suspected of smoking prohibited substances. When approached, the group dispersed. During the chase, Omar Badjie collapsed and lost consciousness. He was rushed to Banjulinding Health Center and later transferred to Kanifing General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Badjie’s death sparked unrest in Mandinary and surrounding communities. Police assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
“The Gambia Police Force extends condolences to the family of the late Omar Badjie and assures the public that the circumstances of his death will be investigated diligently. Anyone found wanting will face the full course of the law. At the same time, the attacks against police officers and the destruction of public property are equally matters of serious concern and will not go unaddressed,” The Police Said.
The statement further emphasized that the police remain committed to protecting lives, maintaining law and order, and ensuring community safety.
Authorities urged young people in Mandinaring and across the country to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and avoid confrontations with security personnel.
“The youth of Mandinary and all communities across the country are urged to exercise restraint, remain disciplined, and respect the rule of law in the resolution of disputes. Violence against security personnel and destruction of public facilities only undermine peace and stability, which are essential for the welfare of all citizens,” he said.
According to the statement, the situation in Mandinaring escalated after the incident, with officers on duty—and even off-duty personnel passing through the community—coming under attack. Police Constable 9728 Assan Jallow of the Anti-Crime Unit was reportedly assaulted, sustaining serious injuries.
