Ousainou Darboe, Secretary General and flag-bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on party members to focus on President Adama Barrow and his administration, describing it as “corrupt and incompetent,” during a party meeting in Birmingham, England.“

“Part of every battle is to know and define the opponent, and for us, our opponent is Adama Barrow. Our focus must be singular: President Adama Barrow and his failed, corrupt, and incompetent administration—that must be our agenda.” Darboe stated.

He urged party members to concentrate on consolidating and expanding the UDP’s support base, appealing to Gambians who seek an honest and competent government capable of addressing the nation’s challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Darboe reaffirmed that the party’s process for selecting its flag-bearer was transparent and fair, with all applicants treated equitably. He also clarified his role within the UDP, noting that he was recruited by the party’s founding fathers and does not unilaterally decide who holds positions within the party. Such decisions are made collectively by party members.

The UDP leader encouraged members to move past internal differences and focus on a campaign aimed at challenging President Barrow’s government. “Let us now turn the page on our differences; those who have chosen to break ranks with us, let us wish them well. Do not engage them in hostility; they are our brothers and sisters,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of avoiding distractions, confrontations, and unproductive arguments, noting that voters are looking for solutions to their problems rather than engaging in “petty politics.”

“We must try our utmost to avoid distractions, confrontations, and unproductive arguments. The voters we are seeking are not interested in petty politics. They want to see and hear ideas and solutions to their problems, and that is what they deserve.”

Highlighting the UDP as a unifying force, Darboe described the party as a beacon of hope for Gambians, promising leadership grounded in honesty, competence, and shared purpose. He emphasized that the UDP is committed to bringing Gambians together—young and old, men and women—from Banjul to Basse, across all communities and faiths.
