The Gambia has reiterated its dedication to the principles and values of the Commonwealth during the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (CFAMM), held on the margins of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Dawda A. Jallow, who represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the meeting, reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and cooperation within the Commonwealth.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Jallow underscored The Gambia’s readiness to continue fostering strong partnerships with member states to build a more resilient and prosperous Commonwealth.
The CFAMM convened foreign ministers and senior representatives from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on urgent global issues and explore pathways toward collective action.
In his remarks, Minister Jallow highlighted the need for a united Commonwealth voice in tackling global challenges, particularly climate change, rising sea levels, and climate-induced displacement—issues of critical concern to vulnerable nations such as The Gambia.
He further stressed the importance of staff retention and strengthening institutional capacity at the Commonwealth Secretariat to ensure the organization fulfills its mandate effectively.
The minister also briefed the gathering on The Gambia’s preparations for the 2026 presidential election, noting the constructive role played by the Commonwealth in observing the 2021 polls, which he said contributed positively to the country’s democratization process.
Minister Jallow emphasized The Gambia’s key national priorities, including energy transition and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI), which he said could enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in governance.
