SSHFC staff resume sit-down, say they can’t work under Manjang

In an open letter addressed to President Adama Barrow, the striking workers at the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation said they are resuming sit-down while expressing their unwillingness to work with managing director of the institution, Muhammed Manjang.

The petitioners who have gathered over two hundred staff signatures in the corporation said they have no confidence in the leadership of Manjang.

The petitioners said they were shocked at the decision of President Barrow to reinstate him.

Manjang who resumed work on Tuesday had differences with over two hundred staff of the Social Security causing a huge strike that lasted for about a month.

The petitioners who enjoy the backing of 271 of the 340 staff of the institution have accused Manjang of benefit fraud, among others.

However, the independent panel that investigated Manjang exonerated him and recommended that an action be taken against the striking staff and their board representative Momodou Camara.

The President announced on November 9 that Manjang who was under a three-month suspension was reinstated and Camara was terminated. The President also endorsed the recommendation of the panel that disciplinary action is taken against staff who protested “without following due procedure”.

“… We are expressing total unwillingness to work under him as we lost total trust and confidence in him as our leader… We the staff are hereby commencing our sit-down strike as of today the November 14, 2018 and we are hoping… that you will reconsider your stance,” a part of the letter reads.
