The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), The Gambia, and QGroup, has signed an agreement to develop a modern recreational space and outdoor gym at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The initiative seeks to promote physical fitness, mental well-being, and social engagement among young people while providing access to essential information and services on health, life skills, and personal development.

According to the ministry’s statement on Facebook, the project is a response to the growing demand for safe, accessible, and youth-friendly wellness facilities in The Gambia, where over 60 percent of the population is under 25 years old.

“This initiative responds to the growing need for safe, accessible, and youth-centered wellness spaces in the country where more than 60% of the population is young people,” the ministry stated in its Facebook post.

The planned facility will feature 20 outdoor gym equipment units—supported by the Italian Cooperation—along with shaded seating areas, durable flooring, lighting, waste bins, and educational fitness boards.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister of Youth and Sports, expressed appreciation to UNFPA and QGroup for their partnership, describing it as a timely and meaningful initiative that demonstrates collective commitment to youth development.

“This is a proud moment for the ministry. For the first time, we are witnessing such a powerful collaboration between the UN system, the private sector, and the ministry all coming together to create something truly impactful for our youth,” Minister Badjie said.

He added that the lack of youth-friendly spaces has been a persistent challenge and that this project represents a significant step toward addressing it. “But we cannot do it alone. Partnerships like this are the way forward.”

UNFPA Country Representative Ndeye Rose Sarr reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to empowering young people, noting that the partnership aligns with UNFPA’s mission to ensure that youth live healthy, productive lives.

“This partnership with MoYS and QGroup reflects our shared commitment to advancing youth well-being and national development,” she said.

QGroup Chief Executive Officer Muhammed Jah said the company is proud to contribute to national progress through initiatives that empower youth. He highlighted that their support in providing gym facilities and ensuring safety and comfort is intended to make the Independence Stadium a welcoming and inspiring space for young people across the country.

The ministry underscored that this collaboration directly supports The Gambia’s national priorities on youth empowerment, health promotion, and social inclusion, while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Together, MoYS, UNFPA, and QGroup are redefining youth development, creating spaces where young people can stay healthy, informed, and inspired to reach their full potential,” the Ministry stated.
