President Barrow today received the U20 national team and GFF officials at the Statehouse in Banjul, where he presented a cheque of five million Dalasis as a token of appreciation for the brilliant performance at the recent U20 AFCON in Egypt.

The President commended the team for putting up respectable performances in all the games while expressing admiration for the head coach Abdoulie Bojang whom he recalled as a tactful player in his active years as a footballer. He encouraged the team to emulate his steadfastness, discipline and foresight.

Touching on the team’s potential, President Barrow urged the GFF officials to see football as a lucrative venture, adding that football promotes unity and development. He said the Gambia’s youthful population presents the country with a solid human resource base that should be fully utilised.

‘’You made us proud, and as a government, we will do anything possible to support you,’’ said the President cheerfully.

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Hon. Bakary Badjie, said the government remains committed to supporting all sporting activities in the country, especially football. He referenced collaborating with the GFF in partially funding the AFCON as a testament to the government’s willingness.

Officials of the GFF, including President Lamin Kaba Bajo, thanked the President and the government for their relentless support over the past years, significantly improving football at all levels. They appealed for more support in preparation for the U20 world cup, which has started in earnest.

The head coach and team captain both expressed gratitude to the President and the government of The Gambia.
