The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has arrested and is investigating nineteen individuals suspected of involvement in online scamming activities.
The suspects are currently in custody at Serekunda Police Station following their arrest by a patrol team in Brusubi. Authorities acted on a tip-off regarding suspicious activities in the area.
Upon reaching a building along the Brusubi Highway, officers discovered that the suspects had occupied two floors outfitted with laptops and other computer equipment.
“The suspects, mostly Nigerian nationals, were allegedly being trained by two Chinese nationals to promote fake online businesses. The suspects, aged between 19 and 35 years, are all Nigerian nationals residing in Sinchu Alagie and Coastal Road,” the police stated.
The GPF’s cybercrime and CSI units conducted a site inspection, collected statements, and secured multiple items for evidence. Recovered materials include 83 iPhones, 27 Android phones, one basic mobile phone, five laptops, six power banks, two smartwatches, one tablet, cash totaling D29,800, 36 Nigerian passports, and 52 exercise books.
The Gambia Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious online activities.
