The police have announced arresting 5 Ghanaians suspected of illegally importing 37 thousand litres of fuel [Diesel] in The Gambia.

“Personnel of the Police Intervention Unit Delta Platoon in collaboration with the GRA [Gambia Revenue Authority] Intelligence Unit, intercepted 37 Thousand litres of fuel (Diesel), suspected to be illegally imported into the country,” they said in a statement.

It added that after the vessel was intercepted, 5 Ghanaian crewmembers on board were arrested. Those arrested are the fifty-year-old captain, forty-seven-year old cook, twenty-nine-year old Chief Officer, twenty-nine-year old fisherman, and forty-five-year old mechanic of the vessel.

The development came on the heels of a joint operation launched at the Sea Port (Waafi Njago) aimed at tackling illegal importation of goods into the country by individuals with the desire to evade payment of taxes and fulfilment of other tax obligations, according to the police statement.

However, the statement did not state the penalty attached to the crime the suspects are accused of.
