Pakistani National Arraigned on False Pretence Charge in Banjul

A Pakistani national, Anjum Akram, has appeared before the Banjul Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of obtaining money by false pretence.

The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was arraigned before Magistrate Krubally, with Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) M. Camara representing the prosecution.

According to the charge, Akram allegedly defrauded Naveed Mustapha Bandesha in 2025 by obtaining €7,000 (approximately D586,846) under the pretext of securing a Portuguese work permit. The prosecution contends that Akram knew the representation was false when he made it.

Following the plea, ACP Camara sought an adjournment to enable the prosecution to call its witnesses. He also reminded the court to consider the substantial sum involved when deciding on bail, though he noted that the decision ultimately rests with the court.

Magistrate Krubally subsequently granted bail in the sum of D550,000, with conditions requiring one Gambian surety holding a valid ID card and swearing to an affidavit of means.

The matter has been adjourned to 1st September 2025 for hearing.
