Gambia’s midfielder, Ebou Adams, has issued a heartfelt apology to the people of the Gambia after being shown a straight red card in the match against Senegal.

Expressing his devastation over the incident, Adams clarified that he never intended to receive a red card while representing his beloved country. Unfortunately, the untimely expulsion had a detrimental impact on the game, the points earned, and the nation’s prospects in the group stage.

In a sincere message posted on his Facebook account, Adams conveyed his apologies to the coach, teammates, Scorpion fans, and the entire Gambian population, both at home and abroad. He expressed regret for being unable to complete the game for his country and its supporters.

“I am devastated of being sent off in our match against Senegal! I never intended to receive a red card whilst representing my beloved country of the Gambia but was unfortunate enough to receive one, which had negatively impacted our game, the points gained, and our nation’s chances of success in the group stage.

“As a result, I want to sincerely apologise to my coach, teammates, scorpion fans, and the entire country of the Gambia and Gambians abroad for not being able to finish the game for my beloved country and fans! From the bottom of my heart, I am sorry,” Ebou Adams wrote on his Facebook account.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal roared into their AFCON2023 title defense with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Scorpions of the Gambia in the Group C opener on Monday.

The Lions wasted no time, claiming an early lead in the 4th minute. Star forward Sadio Mané orchestrated the attack, serving up a delightful pass for 24-year-old Pape Gueye to finish.

The Gambia, stung by the early goal, responded with a bite. Both Musa Barrow and Yankuba Minteh threatened the Senegalese net, but their efforts fell short.

Just before halftime, Gambia’s hopes took a blow when midfielder Ebou Adams received a straight red card after VAR intervention, leaving the Scorpions to face the second half a man down.

As a consequence of the red card, Adams will be absent from Gambia’s upcoming group C matches against Guinea Conakry and Cameroon.
