A team of Chinese surgeons has arrived in The Gambia to perform free cataract surgeries for more than 226 patients at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) over the course of two weeks.

This initiative forms part of the ongoing healthcare collaboration between The Gambia and China, aimed at strengthening medical services and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Yusupha Touray, expressed sincere gratitude to the people of China for their continued support, noting the project’s profound impact on the lives of Gambians affected by cataracts.

“When people have eye problems and fear losing sight, it is devastating, and coming forward to salvage the situation is something big we can always be grateful for,” the Permanent Secretary remarked.

Speaking on behalf of the Chinese Ambassador, the Counselor of the Chinese Embassy described the program as a landmark achievement in Gambia-China cooperation. He highlighted that the initiative is not merely about providing medical care, but also about sharing valuable expertise.

“Today’s project is important, and I hope that after two weeks of the project, more than 200 patients can be cured,” he stated.

Dr. Mustapha Bittaye, Chief Medical Director of EFSTH, underscored the hospital’s central role in the country’s healthcare system. He noted that medical projects implemented at EFSTH have a far-reaching impact, benefiting communities nationwide, and expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Chinese medical team for their support.

Cataracts, a condition marked by clouding of the eye’s natural lens, lead to blurred vision and, if untreated, can cause permanent vision loss. The condition is especially prevalent among older adults, making interventions like this critical for public health.
